Whether you’re a new sauna owner or a seasoned pro, understanding this rule is the key to unlocking the full health benefits of your sessions. Here is everything you need to know about the 200 Rule and how to apply it to your home or commercial sauna.


What is the Sauna 200 Rule?

The 200 Rule is a simple mathematical formula used to find the "sweet spot" for a traditional Finnish sauna. It states that:

The Temperature (in Fahrenheit) + The Relative Humidity (%) = 200.

How it Works in Practice

The goal is to keep the sum of these two numbers around 200. If the sum is significantly lower, the sauna might feel underwhelming. If it’s significantly higher, the environment can become too intense or even uncomfortable.

Examples of the 200 Rule:

  • The Traditional Balance: 180°F + 20% Humidity = 200

  • The "Steam Lovers" Setup: 160°F + 40% Humidity = 200

  • The High-Heat Approach: 190°F + 10% Humidity = 200


Why Does the 200 Rule Matter?

The rule exists because of how the human body perceives heat. Humidity acts as a conductor; the more moisture there is in the air, the hotter the temperature feels on your skin.

  1. Safety First: When humidity is high, your sweat doesn’t evaporate as quickly, which is your body's primary way of cooling down. The 200 Rule prevents you from accidentally over-stressing your system in high-humidity environments.

  2. Customization: Not everyone likes 190°F heat. If you prefer a milder temperature (say, 150°F), the 200 Rule tells you that you should aim for about 50% humidity to achieve a deeply therapeutic sweat.

How to Apply the Rule with Your Gear

To master the 200 Rule, you need two essential tools in your sauna: a Thermometer and a Hygrometer.

1. Watch the Hygrometer

When you pour water over your sauna stones (loyly), the humidity will spike. Watch your hygrometer—if you are at 180°F and your humidity hits 40%, you’ve reached a sum of 220. This is a sign to stop adding water and let the room settle.

2. Manage the Airflow

If your numbers are climbing too high, use your sauna's ventilation slides. Opening the vent allows fresh air in, bringing the humidity down and resetting your "sum" back toward the 200 mark.


Is the 200 Rule a Strict Law?

Absolutely not! Sauna use is a deeply personal experience.

  • The "High-Performance" Users: Some experienced users prefer a sum of 220 or 240, especially for shorter sessions.

  • The Beginners: If you are just starting, you might find a sum of 160–170 is plenty to get your heart rate up.
